NAT GREENE CALENDAR |

January 10, 2012 - Educating young fly fishers at Nat Greene
is big deal. We are active in programs with the Boy Scouts, Trout in the
Classroom, and Rivercourse. Rivercourse is North Carolina's cold water
conservation, fly fishing youth camp for boys and girls 13-15 years old. The
2012 session will be the tenth camp. This Trout Unlimited camp is an exciting
way to teach kids about the importance of our cold water resources while
exposing them to the sport of fly fishing. Come hear how Nat Greene’s
contributions have helped shape the lives of future generations and how you can
help with the 2012 camp. If we don't teach kids about fly fishing and the
environment, who will? Jeff Curtis is the co-owner of Curtis Wright Outfitters
(fly shops and guide service). He has worked with young people for over 25
years. 2012 will be his 7th year as the Rivercourse camp director. Jeff has
found that sharing his passion for fly fishing with the next generation is
extremely rewarding.
All are welcome.

February 14, 2012 - February 14, 2012 William “Bo” Cash is charming,
but crusty. If you want to visit his fly shop, Table Rock Angler in Morganton,
you have to call for an appointment. He wants to meet and talk with you. He
won’t sell anything over the internet. You are buying his equipment and he wants
to make sure you have the right stuff. Born in Morganton, Bo has not
wandered far from the Blue Ridge foothills, but he has managed to accomplish a
lot. He taught general sciences, ecology, and biology in Cleveland and Burke
Counties for 28 years; began tying flies in 1970, started building rods in 1976,
and opened a fly shop in 1980. He has fished the streams of Southwest Virginia,
East Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and many others across the United
States. In 1986, Bo wrote the first chapter of a book. After 25 years of
writing in back country lantern light, he finished Water Under the Bridge, a
Journey Through a Life in the Outdoors. This book is less a how-to on fly
fishing and more a reflection on the Blue Ridge and a grandfather who started
him on his journey. You won’t need an appointment to hear Bo’s lively
stories about fishing and the Blue Ridge, but you may want to arrive early to
make sure you get a seat.
All are welcome.

March 13, 2012 - Although the weather may say otherwise, spring
actually arrives on the Roanoke River in early March with the annual spawning
run of Hickory Shad , quickly followed by an equally spectacular spawning run of
Striped Bass. As featured on ESPN, the Roanoke River is considered by many
fishermen to be a premier destination for Hickory Shad and Striped Bass. These
spawning fish aggressively strike flies as well as artificial lures. Top water
fishing for Striped Bass is fantastic early in the morning and late in the
afternoon in early May. 50 fish days are not uncommon. Captain Dean Lamont will
be talking to us about how to fly fish the Roanoke River for these two species.
He also threatens to mention the other fly fishing experiences we are missing on
the coast. Capt. Dean Lamont of
Crystal Coast
Adventures specializes in fly fishing and light tackle guided charters in
the Cape Lookout, Morehead City, Beaufort, Atlantic Beach, Harkers Island,
Emerald Isle, and the Roanoke River. Captain Dean Lamont is a USCG Master
Captain, and a former President of the Cape Lookout Flyfishers. He has two
boats, an 18 ft Maverick Master Angler flats boat and a 25ft Hydra Sports Center
Console.

Nat Greene
Flyfishers is the Greensboro, NC affiliate chapter of both
Trout Unlimited (TU) and the
Federation of Fly Fishermen (FFF), national conservation organizations
dedicated to maintaining our cold water resources. Past club conservation
efforts have included stream cleanups, stream restoration, and support of
local, state, and national fish and wildlife agencies in an effort to
insure the preservation of our cold water fisheries.
Nat Greene takes
an active role in educating our local children, adults, and scouting
organizations in the principles of conservation, ecosystem management, and
in introducing them to the enjoyment of tying, casting, and fishing
artificial flies. In addition to providing financial and volunteer
assistance to conservation groups, the club arranges numerous "fun"
fishing outings throughout the year. Also, our more experienced members
share their expertise with fly tying, casting, fishing techniques, rod
building, and other activities with the entire club. We welcome your
support and participation!
The Nat Greene
Flyfishers hold their monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each
month. Everyone is welcome to attend -- you need not be a member!
Refer to our
calendar for information regarding
date, time, and featured speaker at the monthly meeting.
