The trip was planned and organized by Lorraine Rothrock. I am a newcomer to the sport of fly fishing, having only started in July 2003. My route of progression in this sport started with crash instruction and reading that was done prior to several business/pleasure trips that my husband and I made out west to Wyoming and Montana. I owe many thanks to Jeff Wilkins for his patience in instructing me on the beginning basics of casting a fly line. My first fishing trip in August 2003 was to the Madison River in West Yellowstone, Montana. Since that first trip, I have returned to Wyoming the last two summers, spending time in the Gros Ventre National Forest at a guest ranch that hosts fly fishers from all over the country. My experience and knowledge of fishing in the streams of western
North Carolina are very limited, so bear with me. At the Nantahala
River I was able to spend three memorable days fishing in some
beautiful trout water. As I ventured out for the first time on Friday
afternoon, the water was murky after a hard rain on Friday morning. I
was hoping that the murkiness of the water would provide a novice
fisherman like me slight edge over the fish. Loraine and Rock showed
me a section of river to fish that was above the electric plant. I
picked my stretch of river and tried my hand at fooling
On Friday evening, we all had a treat when Linda Heller arrived with Bob Clouser. Linda and Bob stayed with our group through the remainder of the weekend, and we all enjoyed their company. Saturday was a great day of fishing and catching! Linda, Bob and I spread out along the same stretch of river I had fished on the previous day. During the day, I had the fortunate opportunity to pick their brains in the “how to - with what” department. Linda and Bob even witnessed a nice trout that I lost on my third attempt at netting it; guessing it was 12-13 inches. It was really a thrill getting a good drift and hooking a nice fish in the exact location where I thought one would be holding. During the entire day, I was able to net a lot of rainbows, a few brook trout (two of them 11-12 inches), and a nice brown trout that was 13 inches. Saturday evening, Rock and Lorraine prepared our delicious dinner of grilled chicken, tomatoes, vegetables, rolls and homemade coconut cream pie. Bob showed up with marshmallows which provided many laughs around the campfire.
Thanks to Nat Greene Fly Club for a great weekend trip to the Nantahala River. I have learned a great new fishing location and a beautiful place to camp. I also learned some valuable new fishing techniques that I will use on future trips. I am especially grateful to Rock and Lorraine for all of their instruction and suggestions to help me. Rock’s simple suggestion that I apply floatant to my leader above my dry fly cured some of the drift and pick-up problems I was having. My reasons for joining the Nat Greene Fly Club included meeting new people, learning where to fish, and to learn more about the sport of fly fishing. Between the great monthly meetings and trips like this one, the Club has exceeded my expectations. ==================================================== Ed Engle to Speak at 2007 Spring Banquet and SeminarRenowned flyfishing writer Ed Engle will speak at the Nat Greene Fly Fishers 2007 Annual Spring Banquet and Seminar. Ed is a really nice guy and we've had great reports from people who have seen his presentations. The 2007 Banquet will be held on March 10th, 2007; more details will be released as the plans come together, but go ahead and reserve the date because you won't want to miss this great event. Ed will present "A Fly Fisher’s Life,' a lighthearted and non-technical program ideally suited for general audiences -- a travelogue of Ed’s fly fishing adventures on Montana’s spring creeks, the warm water spring creeks of Texas, Mexican bonefish and permit, Chilean fiords, and Alaskan silver salmon. Ed has been an avid fly fisherman for the past 30 years for a variety of game fish species. Ed is especially interested in small fly tactics and techniques -- his small fly research has taken him to a many of the West's famous tailwaters and to spring creeks across the country. He is also dedicated to fly fishing small streams and high country lakes for wild trout. Ed balances out his interest in the “small side of fly fishing” with the avid pursuit of king salmon on the fly. Ed lives near the South Platte River, one of Colorado’s premier tailwaters, where he guides and instructs fly fishers. Ed currently holds the positions of Southwest Field Editor for FLY FISHERMAN MAGAZINE, columnist for FLY FISHING & FLY TYING JOURNAL, outdoor writer for the BOULDER DAILY CAMERA, and a regular contributor to AMERICAN ANGLER. His freelance articles and photographs have appeared in: Fly Fisherman Magazine, Fly Rod & Reel, American Angler, Trout, Warmwater Fly Fishing, Fly Tyer, Saltwater Fly Fishing, Angler’s Journal, Sports Afield, Fly Fishing Magazine, and Gray's Journal. He hs authored books including FLY FISHING THE TAILWATERS, SEASONAL: A LIFE OUTSIDE, SPLITTING CANE: CONVERSATIONS WITH BAMBOO ROD MAKERS, TYING SMALL FLIES, and FISHING SMALL FLIES. ==================================================== Newsletter Editor Position AvailableIf anybody has an interest in learning to produce and distribute the Nat Greene monthly newsletter, please send an email to admin@natgreeneflyfishers.org and let us know of your interests. We'll show you how it all comes together and we'll be glad to coach you through the first few months. ==================================================== NAT GREENE FLYFISHERS CLUB
